January 2026 Library News

This winter, readers of all ages are invited to choose their own WINTER READING adventure! Pick up an official reading log at GHL or WSL starting January 1, and return it by March 31 for a fancy new bookmark and a chance to win more prizes!

Along with Garden Home, West Slope Community Library is now also a drop off site for Positive Charge PDX's Two Can Tuesdays!

At both libraries, you can drop off non-perishable foods, hygiene products, and household essentials that trusted community partners and volunteers will safely distribute to families and individuals unable to access these items anywhere else right now.

Some of the most requested items are: Plant based milk, basmati rice, tomato paste, dried spices and herbs, diapers, and menstrual products.

A New Year, A New Schedule for Storytime!

Starting in January, the Family Storytime schedule at Garden Home is changing!

On Wednesdays at 10am, we are continuing with the Morning Edition of our Storytime

On Thursdays at 5pm, we're excited to introduce our new Evening Edition Storytime

We will be discontinuing our regular Saturday Storytime, but stay tuned for more fun Saturday programs coming soon!

COMING TO WEST SLOPE IN JANUARY: We’re adding a new book group to the lineup. This group will focus on genre fiction: sci-fi, horror, romance, fantasy, and mystery. Join a rotating ensemble of staff members from Garden Home and West Slope Community Libraries for an exploration of the underdogs of Literature! Come every month or just for your favorite genres. We will meet on the second Friday of every month at West Slope. On January 9th, we will discuss The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. Get ready for a penguin takeover at West Slope Community Library! This January, our Take & Make kits include materials to create cute little felt penguins. Register for a kit or come in for first-come, first-served kits while supplies last.

We're celebrating National Houseplant Appreciation Day (Jan. 10) by hosting a plant swap! Bring your plants and cuttings to share with others, meet other plant lovers, and make new friends (plant or human). Houseplants and garden plants are welcome, as are seeds to prepare for spring gardening. Please bring ready-to-grow plants. Avoid wilted, newly dug, bare root, pest-ridden, and dormant bulbs. Depending on the number of participants we may limit the number each attendee can take. Registration encouraged.
